Dr Linda Bendall
Leukaemia Cell Biology Group
Dr. Linda Bendall is a Cancer Institute NSW Fellow at The University of Sydney. She graduated from the University of Sydney's Department of Biochemistry, in 1981, with First Class Honours.
After working at the Garvan Research Institute she took an extended break from research for parental duties. She returned to research in 1989 and in 1992 received an NHMRC scholarship to undertake PhD studies into the effect of the bone marrow microenvironment on leukemia and graduated from the University of Sydney's faculty of Medicine in 1996.
In 1997 she received an NHMRC postdoctoral fellowship, which she undertook in Prof James Wiley's laboratory at Nepean Hospital. During this time she maintained close ties with Westmead Hospital. She now heads her own research group, the Leukemia Cell Biology Group which is focused on understanding the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in regulating normal and malignant hematopoiesis.
Research Interests
Dr Bendall’s research work has focused on the impact of non-hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow on the behaviour of leukaemia cells.
The Leukaemia Cell Biology Group has identified SDF-1 as a key molecule that regulates the interaction of leukemic cells with the bone marrow microenvironment, and the growth and survival of leukemic cells. The laboratory is currently involved in pre-clinical trials of agents that disrupt SDF-1 binding to its receptor CXCR4 as a therapeutic strategy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is also investigating the signalling events that occur within the cell following stimulation with SDF-1 and is currently investigating the impact of inhibiting these signalling pathways.
The Leukemia Cell Biology Group consists of a team of post-doctoral scientists, postgraduate students and research staff. The group is supported by state, national and international peer-reviewed grants as well as funding from industry.
Current projects include:
- CXCR4 antagonists in acute lymphoblastic leukemia in NOD/SCID mice.
- Enhancement of the effects of cytotoxic agents by mTOR inhibitors in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
- Antagonists of p38 MAPK as therapeutics for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
- CXCR4 in ALL cell trafficking and chemo-sensitivity.
