Research students at Westmead Millennium Institute

Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) is one of the largest and fastest growing medical research centres in Australia. Research productivity is competitive on a world scale, and this is reflected by the significant success in obtaining both national and international peer-reviewed funding.

WMI has cutting edge molecular and clinical facilities, meaning research extends from the laboratory to the patient and spans the entire research spectrum from initial gene discovery to the clinical trial of new disease prevention and treatment.

All students and staff at Westmead Millennium Institute have access to high technology centres and facilities including the following:

  • Genomics (microarrays and sequencing)
  • Proteomics (mass spec)
  • Imaging and cell biology (confocal and electron microscopy, flow cytometry and cell sorting)
  • Bioinformatics
  • Animal services (including transgenic and knock-out facilities)
  • Clinical research and trials
  • Epidemiological databases
  • Statistical and database support

In conjunction with the University of Sydney, WMI currently supports over 100 Honours, Masters and PhD students. The research and clinical mix at WMI provides an ideal location for training for future careers in academia (biomedical, clinical and public health), associated health-care and biotechnology.
